Oxburgh Hall

Last Saturday we were going to take a boat trip to see the seals but the closer we got the worse the weather got. Luckily we were able to get a refund and decided to look for something else to do. The best thing about this island is that you don't have to go to far to find something to see and do. We went to Oxburgh Hall in Kings Lynn.   

Oxburgh hall is a moted country house then at dates back to the late 1400's. It was built by Sir Edmund Bedingfield as a family home. In fact, the family has owned this home since it was built.

From the top tower there is a great view of the garden and all the buildings.

There is a giant chess board.

Even though it was early fall the flowers were still in bloom. I loved the purple and gold.

There was a whole wall covered in pears

I'll never get enough of these large wooden doors.

The best thing about this home is that there are some many personal family items on display.

This library had hidden doors the owner had book ends put on the doors and when the doors are closed you would never know that there's a door on the wall of books.

What would PETA say?  tsk... tsk...

Wallpaper samples. almost every wall in this home is wallpapered.

The kids were given a scavenger hunt and they did a great job finding everything.

Oxburgh has some needlework done by Mary Queen of Scotts that were done while she in England during her escape.

One of things that Oxburgh hall is known for is there priest hole. A Catholic priest may have had to hide within the small disguised room in the event of a raid. The room is in a trapdoor, which when closed blends in with the tiled floor.  The one at Oxburgh is open to visitors and it's very small nobody was brave enough to try squeezing into it.

Even though our day was supposed to be on a boat watching seals, I'm so glad we found something else to do and enjoyed a day with our friends. We'll have to wait until summer again to see the seals.

Happy Independence Day!

I never thought I'd be celebrating the fourth of July in the country we won our independence from, but here we are. For the festivities we went to a nearby base and enjoyed the fair and food booths. Mick volunteered at 2 food booths and was MIA most of the day until the fireworks started.

There was a whole kid section, where the kids could play, and this bubble game was Brody's favorite.  They stick your kid inside a ball and blow it up with air then they let them roll around in a pool of water.

The Red Arrows performed in the sky and they did a great job.

 

Luckily we had friends that lived on the base and we were able to hang out with them for a while and take a break from time to time. It was pretty chilly by the time the fireworks got started.

I think 70% of the people out for the fireworks were British.

 

All in all a memorable fourth of July.

 



Women's day out

Our base is always putting events together to bring up morale. I am so grateful for all the events that I am able to attend while we are stationed here. This past week was spouses day out, but the guys were invited too. My husband had to work but was able to stop for a little while and visit with me.

 

We were greeted at the door with a glass of wine, my favorite way to be greeted.. just kidding. This singing trio was very talented and their outfits were adorable. They entertained us for most of the night.

 

 

 

We had tea, cake, scones, cucumber and salmon sandwiches. And at the end of the night we were allowed to purchase tea cups and plates at a discounted price.

While we munched on food there was a few games of bingo, some door prizes were given out.

At one point I had tea, water, wine, and a whiskey sour.. what a combo. There was also a potato bar and sweets table.

The night ended with karaoke and drinks at the E-Club.
