Canterbury, UK

This past Sunday we took a trip to Canterbury, it's about 2 hours from our home in Lakenheath. We spent the whole day and explored with beautiful city. I was a little sad that Sydney wasn't able to come but she had a hurt ankle and was not able to walk. Let me tell you what I know and learned about this city.

This building is called Old Kings School shop. This building really does lean over into the road and it's supported by a steel cage internally. This building has been though a fire and a lot damage but was renovated. It's no longer used as the school's shop also it does sell a lot of books.  Most people line up to take a picture by the front door, which I'm sure is not original.

I love English towns, I wonder if the people who live here appreciate it as much as I do. The crooked streets, the cute old shops mixed with the new. Drinking and eating outside near the road.

This is Christ Church gate which leads into the main entrance into to the cathedral.

This is the main center of town and it's surrounded with colorful shop and eateries.

We sat outside The Old Butter Market eating our lunch and people watching for over an hour.

If you've never heard of Cath Kidston, look it up. If you love English roses and floral prints... this is your store!

This is another city gate that leads into the Westgate gardens.

Canterbury tales, you can purchase tickets and take part in the famous medieval misadventures that this city is known for.

This little boy kept us entertained with music while we waited to go into the cathedral.

Canterbury cathedral, so beautiful!!

I learned about St Thomas Becket, during our visit. He was rich man who an agent to the archbishop of Canterbury. He was sent on several missions to Rome and had also became good friends with king Henry II. When the archbishop died, Becket was appointed archbishop his relationship with king took a turn for the worse. Beckett refused to give the monarchy power over the church.  Beckett was murdered inside this Cathedral by the kings knights. His death made him a martyr and the Pope made Beckett a saint shortly after his death.

I felt like I was in a Harry Potter movie, what a beautiful place.

These are the ruins, of the abbey.

If want to see more of the cathedral I would suggest going here to see virtual tours.

Walking around the town we passed lot of pubs and historic buildings.

This is known as the old weaver's house and it's one of the most photographed buildings in the city. the house faces the street on one side and the river on another side. This house dates back to the 1500's and was home to refugees who set to work weaving.

These days it's busy restaurant and if you are going to eat on a weekend, you should have a reservation.

At the end of the day we decided to take a stroll in the Westgate gardens.
